Corporate Christmas Gifts in Australia That Don't End Up in a Drawer

How to choose corporate Christmas gifts for staff and clients that people actually use, with ideas by budget, a realistic ordering timeline and a note on tax.

Custom branded RUGD StubCups for a corporate Christmas gift order

Corporate Christmas gifts have a reputation problem. Too many of them are lanyards, stress balls and branded pens that go straight from the gift bag to the bin, or to the bottom drawer, which is the same thing with extra steps.

It doesn't have to be that way. We make branded and personalised cups for businesses, sporting clubs and events all year round, and the simple truth is that the gifts people keep are the ones they use. Here's how to get it right this Christmas, including the timeline that's easy to leave too late.

Quick answer: the best corporate Christmas gifts in Australia are practical items people use every day, branded subtly or personalised with each person's name. Budget per head, choose quality over quantity, and order early: standard-colour branded orders ship 2 to 4 weeks after artwork approval, plus delivery, so aim to approve your proof by early November.

The drawer test

Before you choose anything, ask one question: where will this be in February? If the honest answer is "in a drawer", it's not the one. A good corporate gift passes three checks:

  1. Used weekly. Your brand gets seen every time it's used, and the person thinks of you kindly every time too.
  2. Good enough to buy for themselves. Cheap merch reflects on your business. Quality reflects better.
  3. Suits almost everyone. No sizes, no assumed hobbies, and it works for people who don't drink alcohol.

Gifts for staff vs gifts for clients

For your team

Staff gifts land best when they feel personal. A team member's name on a quality item says "we know who you are" in a way a logo on its own doesn't. For a small team, individual personalisation is easy and affordable. For larger teams, a subtle company logo plus a name works well.

For clients and partners

Client gifts should be a little more polished and a little less "merch". Keep branding modest, include a handwritten card from the person who manages the relationship, and choose something they'll use at work or at home. Consumables (local coffee, wine, a hamper) are safe, but a durable gift keeps working for you long after the hamper's gone.

Practical gift ideas by budget

Under $30 per person

  • Locally roasted coffee or a quality tea selection
  • A small hamper of local snacks
  • A quality notebook with your logo debossed on the cover

$30 to $70 per person

  • A branded insulated cup. Our corporate StubCups are laser engraved with your logo. It's a coffee cup at the desk and a stubby cooler at knock-off, with a bottle opener built into the base. Because the logo is engraved into the powder coat rather than printed, there's no ink to peel or rub off.
  • A quality cap or beanie for outdoor and field teams
  • A local food and drink hamper

$70 and over

  • A cup and coffee bundle: an engraved cup with a bag of beans from a local roaster
  • A StubJug for teams on site all day: a 1000ml insulated water bottle that also cools a tallie or longneck after work
  • Experience vouchers for a team day out instead of individual gifts

How many do you need, and how do you order?

  • Under 50 people: the easiest option is to order individually personalised cups on our product page. Each cup can have its own name or a short message (personalisation adds $15 to the cup price), and you'll see a live preview before you order.
  • 50 or more: request a corporate quote. Branded orders start from 50 units in our standard colours, we reply within 1 business day with pricing and options, and we send a digital proof for you to approve before anything is engraved.
  • 500 or more: custom colours outside our standard range become an option, with a longer lead time.

The Christmas timeline (work backwards from your party)

This is the bit that's easy to get wrong. Branded orders in standard colours ship 2 to 4 weeks after artwork approval, and custom colours take 5 to 7 weeks. Then there's delivery on top, which tends to slow down in December.

If your Christmas party or last day is in mid December, a realistic timeline looks like this:

  1. Late October: send your quote request with quantity, colours and your logo.
  2. By early November: approve your digital proof and confirm your order. For custom colours (500 or more units), approve by mid October.
  3. Mid November to early December: engraving and dispatch.
  4. Before your party: gifts arrive, with a little buffer for delivery.

Running later than that? Tell us your deadline in the quote form. We'll always tell you straight whether we can make it. For small teams ordering individually personalised cups, we process orders, including engraving, within 1 to 2 business days, so order at least two weeks before your party date and allow about a week extra for WA, NT and Tasmania. Gifts for trade and site crews

If your team spends the day on site, skip the desk gifts. Something that survives the ute and gets used at smoko and knock-off is a better fit than another branded notebook. A cup with each person's name engraved on it does two things: it gets used every day, and it stops walking off the site. Add your logo on the back if you want the branding, and keep it subtle. For crews working long hot days, a 1000ml StubJug covers water all day and a tallie after work.

A quick note on tax

We're cup makers, not accountants, so treat this as general information. In Australia, non-entertainment gifts to employees valued under $300 each (including GST) and given infrequently are generally covered by the fringe benefits tax minor benefit exemption, and gifts like hampers or practical items are generally treated differently from entertainment such as event tickets. Client gifts that aren't entertainment are usually deductible. Your accountant can confirm how it applies to your business.

What happens when the gifts land

A few things customers have told us after their cups arrived:

  • "Some of our employees kept the leftover ones and they're loving them." Kasey M.
  • "Ordered 3 of these for sporting coaches. They were very impressed. Communication and processing time were amazing." Ebony

Tips for branding that people actually want to use

  • Go subtle. A clean single-colour logo looks premium. Taglines, phone numbers and web addresses make it look like promo stock.
  • Add names if you can. Logo on one side and a name on the other turns the company's cup into their cup. Ask us about it in your quote request.
  • Match your brand colours from the standard range. There's a wide range of standard colours, so you may find a close match without going custom.
  • Only use artwork you own. Your own logo is perfect. Sporting club, brand or licensed logos need written permission.

Corporate Christmas gift FAQs

What is a good corporate Christmas gift in Australia?

Something practical that people use every day, branded subtly or personalised with their name. Quality insulated drinkware, local food and coffee, and experiences all work well. Avoid cheap promotional merch that ends up in a drawer.

How much should a business spend on employee Christmas gifts?

There's no set rule. $30 to $100 per person covers most genuinely useful options. Keeping each gift under $300 (including GST) and infrequent is relevant to the FBT minor benefit exemption, so check with your accountant.

How early should I order branded corporate gifts for Christmas?

Aim to approve your artwork proof by early November, which means getting your quote request in during late October. Branded orders in standard colours ship 2 to 4 weeks after approval, plus delivery, and custom colours take 5 to 7 weeks.

What's the minimum order for branded StubCups?

50 units for laser engraving in our standard colours. Custom colours outside the standard range start from 500 units. For smaller teams, you can order individually personalised cups on the product page with no minimum.

Can I put each employee's name on their gift?

Yes. For small teams, personalise each cup on the product page. For bigger orders, mention names in your quote request and we'll talk you through the options.

If you'd like a hand, send us a quote request and tell us your deadline. We reply within one business day. From the two of us and the whole RUGD team, thanks for thinking of your people this Christmas.
