Six RUGD StubCups in different colours lined up as Secret Santa gift ideas

Secret Santa should be the easiest gift of the year. One person, one budget, done. And yet every December someone ends up holding a novelty mug they'll never drink from, and someone else spends their lunch break panic-buying at the servo.

We've put together the gift ideas that actually get kept, sorted by three common Kris Kringle budgets, plus the simple rules that stop it going wrong.

Quick answer: the best Secret Santa gifts are useful, good quality versions of everyday things, or something they can eat or drink. Spend close to the limit (not over it), skip anything personal like skincare or fragrance, and avoid inside jokes if you don't know the person well. Under $50, a quality reusable cup, a local food or coffee hamper, or a good book are all safe wins.

The three rules of a Secret Santa gift that lands

Before you scroll the list, these three rules will do most of the work for you.

  1. Useful beats funny. A joke gift gets a laugh for about four seconds, then lives in a drawer. A gift that gets used every day gets remembered every day.
  2. Go general, not personal. Unless you know them well, skip scents, skincare, clothing sizes and anything that assumes a hobby. Food, drink, homewares and everyday carry are safe ground.
  3. Spend to the limit, not past it. Going way over makes everyone else feel awkward. Going way under feels like an afterthought. Land close to the number.

Secret Santa gifts under $20

At this price, consumables are your best friend. They're easy to give, nobody needs to find room for them and they never feel cheap if you pick something good.

  • A bag of beans from a local roaster. Ask for a medium roast if you don't know their taste. If they don't drink coffee, loose leaf tea works the same way.
  • Good chocolate from a small Australian maker. One block of the good stuff beats a big box of the average stuff.
  • A bottle of local hot sauce or chilli oil. A surprisingly safe pick for a lot of offices. Just check they're not the person who orders everything mild.
  • A small native plant. A potted succulent or native for the desk. Low effort to keep alive and it doesn't add clutter.
  • A deck of cards or a pocket game. Perfect for anyone heading camping or to the beach over the break.

Secret Santa gifts under $30

  • A recent paperback. Pick something widely loved rather than niche. A bookshop gift card tucked inside the cover is the safe version.
  • A mini hamper of local snacks. Grab two or three things from the deli or farmers market: crackers, a relish, something sweet.
  • A quality tea towel or linen napkin set. Boring on paper, genuinely used every day, especially in a new home.
  • A beach or picnic game. Christmas is summer here. Anything that gets used at the beach or a park over the break fits the season.

Secret Santa gifts under $50

This is the sweet spot where you can buy one properly good thing instead of a few okay ones.

  • A reusable cup that does more than one job. Our StubCup is $49 and it's our flagship, so we'll own our bias. It's a coffee cup in the morning and a stubby cooler at knock-off, keeps drinks cold for up to 24 hours or hot for up to 6, and has a bottle opener built into the base. It's the rare gift that suits the coffee drinker and the beer drinker equally, which is exactly what you want when you don't know them well.

  • A trucker cap. Adjustable fit, so there's no sizing gamble. Our trucker caps are $49 in 100% cotton.
  • A coffee or tea subscription for a month. Some roasters sell a single gifted month.
  • A good cookbook. Pick one built around simple weeknight food rather than a chef's showpiece.
  • A beach towel or picnic rug. Again, summer Christmas. It'll be used within a week.
  • A food and drink hamper you build yourself. Beans, chocolate, a jar of something good and a card. Personal without being too personal.

If you've drawn someone tricky

The person you've never actually spoken to

Go for something everyone uses: a quality cup, good coffee or a food hamper. Nothing with a slogan, nothing that assumes a hobby.

The boss

Stick to the limit like everyone else. Something useful and good quality reads as thoughtful. Something expensive reads as trying too hard.

The person who doesn't drink

Easy to miss, so if you're unsure, skip the wine. A cup that works for coffee, tea, water or soft drink covers everyone. The StubCup fits standard 330 to 375ml cans and stubbies too, so it works just as well with a can of soft drink.

The bloke in the office (or the tradie on the crew)

Something that works at smoko and at knock-off. A cup that takes the morning coffee and the afternoon cold one does both jobs, and a name engraved on it stops it walking off.

The person who has just started

Something for their desk or their commute. It quietly says "glad you're here".

What to skip

  • Novelty mugs, joke socks and anything with a pun on it.
  • Scented candles, bath products and skincare for someone you barely know.
  • Alcohol, unless you know for sure they drink.
  • Anything that needs a size.
  • Personalised items for someone whose name you're not 100% sure how to spell. We say this lovingly, as people who engrave a lot of names.

How we put this list together

We're Malin and Andre, and we started RUGD from our garage on the Sunshine Coast in 2022. We make the StubCup, so of course we're biased about that one. Two items on this list are ours and the rest aren't, because a list that's only our products wouldn't help you much.

Christmas timing

Plenty of workplace Secret Santas happen at the Christmas party, often well before Christmas Day, so you may have less time than you think. If you're ordering online, give yourself at least two weeks before the party for processing and standard post. Express shipping buys you a few days if you've left it late. Buying for Christmas Day instead? Here are our Christmas delivery cut-off dates by state.

Two things worth knowing if you're ordering from us:

  • We process every order within 1 to 2 business days, including engraved ones, so a name on the cup doesn't slow it down.
  • Some colours are on pre-order at times. A pre-order colour ships when new stock lands, so check the product page before you pick one for a deadline.

Secret Santa FAQs

How much should you spend on Secret Santa?

Whatever limit the group agrees on, which at work is often somewhere between $20 and $50. Spend close to that number. If there's no limit, $30 to $50 is a comfortable middle that doesn't put pressure on anyone.

Is Secret Santa the same as Kris Kringle?

Yes. In Australia the two names are used for the same thing: everyone draws a name, buys one gift for that person and the giver stays anonymous until the gifts are opened.

What's a good Secret Santa gift for someone you don't know?

Something useful that suits almost anyone: a quality reusable cup, good coffee or chocolate, or a small food hamper. Avoid anything personal, sized or jokey.

Is a personalised gift a good idea for Secret Santa?

It can be, but only if you're certain of the spelling and the gift will still suit them. A name on a cup turns a nice gift into their cup. If you're not sure, keep it plain. Personalised items usually can't be returned for a change of mind, and that includes ours.

Can you regift for Secret Santa?

Only if it's brand new, in its packaging and something you'd genuinely buy for them anyway. If you have to remove a gift tag first, it's probably not the one.

Whatever you pick, give it with a quick handwritten note. It costs nothing and it's the bit people remember. Happy Secret Santa-ing from us both.
