We engrave names, dates, in-jokes and logos onto stubby coolers and cups in our Sunshine Coast warehouse, so we've seen what works and what makes people wince when they unwrap it. Here are our favourite engraving ideas, sorted by who you're buying for, plus the practical tips that make sure it looks as good on the cup as it did in your head.

Quick answer: the best things to engrave on a stubby cooler, cup or gift are short, personal and easy to read. A name or initials on their own, or a name plus one short line, works on almost any gift. Keep lines short so the text engraves bigger, avoid long quotes, choose a font that matches the tone, and double check spelling before you order, because engraving is permanent.

The three rules of a great engraving

1. Short wins. One to three lines is plenty. A long quote squeezed onto a cup ends up tiny and hard to read.
2. Specific beats generic. "Best Dad" is fine. "Dad's coffee. Hands off." makes him laugh every morning.
3. Spell check, then spell check again. Names, dates and apostrophes. Read it out loud before you hit order.

Initials, monograms and dates

When in doubt, initials are the classiest option going. A few formats that look great:

• Single initial: M
• Full initials: MJT
• Couple initials: M & A

How to get it right on a StubCup

A few practical things we've learned from a lot of engraving:

• Use up to three lines. Our personaliser gives you up to three lines of text, with up to 40 characters per line. Shorter lines engrave bigger and read better.
• Match the font to the message. A bold block font like Bebas Neue or Poppins suits names and short punchy lines. Script fonts like Alex Brush or Pacifico look lovely for names and dates but get harder to read when the text is long.
• Use the live preview. You'll see the engraving on the cup in your chosen colour before you order, so play around with fonts and line breaks until it looks right.
• Consider the back. You can engrave the front and add the back for an extra $5. Name on the front, a date or a message on the back works well.
• Logos and images work too. Upload your own logo or artwork, or use the photo option that turns a picture into engraving-ready line art. Please only use artwork you own or have permission to use. We can't engrave sporting club, team, school or brand logos without written permission.

Personalising a StubCup adds $15 to the cup price for text or an image, or $19 for both. We engrave in-house and still process engraved orders within 1 to 2 business days. Personalised cups are final sale (no change-of-mind returns), so if you're not sure of a name's spelling or the colour, it's worth checking first.

Before you order: a quick checklist

1. Names spelled correctly (and the right title: Mrs, Ms, Miss, Mr, Coach)
2. Dates in the format you want, such as 21.03.2026 or March 2026
3. Apostrophes in the right place: Dad's, not Dads
4. Line breaks where you want them
5. The colour is in stock and not on pre-order, if you need it by a date

The last safe day to order depends on your state, so check our Christmas delivery cut-off dates by state and give yourself a few days of breathing room, because engraving is permanent and it pays to get the spelling right without rushing.

What should I engrave on a gift for him?

His name or initials, a nickname, or a short line about something he loves, like his coffee, his BBQ or his fishing. Keep it to one or two short lines so it's easy to read.

How many characters can you engrave on a cup?

On a StubCup you can engrave up to three lines of up to 40 characters each. Shorter lines engrave bigger, so for the clearest result keep it as short as you can and check the live preview.

Can you engrave a logo?

It's engraved into the powder coat rather than printed on top, so there's no ink to peel or rub off.

Can I return a personalised gift?

Personalised items generally can't be returned for a change of mind, because they can't be resold. Your rights under Australian Consumer Law for faulty items still apply.
